Title: Class Clown
Genre: Comedy/Intrigue/School Life
Origins: This is a character I was applying to an M&M game with. So, he has an actual backstory rather than a first roleplay, but I'm gonna put that in here anyway to give you a look at the tone I'll be using.
Milo was born in King City fourteen years ago, and has spent almost his entire life so far within its borders with his parents. His father Samuel is an accountant for National Bank One, while his mother Charlie hasn't worked a job in years. Between the two kind and unadventurous adults, none of Milo's peers can work out where his innate sense of insanity comes from. As early as primary school, he could be found disrespecting his teachers and making other risky plays in an often successful attempt to see the laughter of his fellow children. His frequent forays into the art of sarcasm lent him knowledge of a sort of 'sweet spot' where he could act uncooperative and rude on an ironic enough level to be considered funny yet also a small enough scale to avoid getting into trouble.
Not that it mattered, of course, because he was getting in trouble for everything else he did. By the time his age was comprised of two digits, Milo had been nailed with planting thumb tacks in inappropriate places, replacing critical teaching apparatus with fragile and unusable replicas, and even leaving bugs and other surveillance equipment in vital areas of the school. Nobody ever found out where he was getting actual licensed equipment, probably because they didn't think to check eBay, but half of Milo's truly heinous crimes where never even discovered until he left the school entirely. In middle school his efforts took on a more classy, gentleman-like approach. The whoopee cushions and whatnot of the past suddenly seemed childish in this sophisticated new environment. The slightly older class clown's repertoire now centred more around such involved techniques as forgery, pickpocketing, and ventriloquism.
But don't misunderstand, he had friends. Boy, Milo had a lot of friends. He had a reputation for being completely fearless in his approach to his work, and that garnered him respect more than anything. He wasn't afraid to share glory with his accomplices either, though he made sure that the tales of his assistants never spread to the staff, and so being approached by Milo with a request for partnership was always beneficial, and rarely of high risk. The kid was a master manipulator, especially adept at lying but also generally an expert at social fu. Between that and his constant desire to fight the system, he has the respect of almost every boy in his grade. The girls were often less amused by his antics, though his clever wordplay and overall charm kept them coming all through to the end of middle school.
As the summer came and Milo gathered his equipment for the coming year of high school, he found things in his life were changing. It started on a morning, just a week after school went out. He was out riding his bike with a friend from down the street when the guy started telling him a story about his plans for the summer. As he listened, Milo grew bored - not because he didn't care about his friend's plans, but because he already knew them. Before each sentence was spoken it was already in Mayfield's head. He thought nothing of it; Sam must have told him before and forgotten about it. Just a few hours after though, he noticed that people around him were a lot easier to manipulate than usual. His parents gave him exactly as much lunch money as he asked for without hesitation. Upon experimentation, he found that he could make his circle of friends do pretty much any dare he wanted, up to and including trying to scale the wall of the ice cream parlour. It was when he made a taxi stop at a green light and start road rage just by looking at the driver and willing it that he realised something was really happening. Several weeks later, Milo is just now heading to high school...but he's already learned a lot this year.
Name: Milo Mayfield
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Appearance: The definition of scruffy little kid. Milo is one of the youngest and shortest boys in his grade, a situation only exaggerated by his unkempt hair and boyish clothes. He always wears shorts, even in winter, and his t-shirts run the borderline between vibrant and fluorescent. These fashion choices garnered much respect and appreciation in middle school, though in a new high school environment they don't seem to get as much admiration. Milo isn't bothered by this, however; another trend he will have to set.
Powers & Skills: Milo is presumably a Mutant (maybe I'll get more into his origin later) with ESP. The main application of this is Telepathy, which can also manifest as Mind Control, Mind Reading, and generally being extremely persuasive (a minor version of this last ability has been building up in him over the last decade, which is why he is so charismatic through his childhood). He also has access to Psychokinesis, and is vaguely aware that this power typically comes packaged with Psychic abilities in his comic books, though he has no idea how to do it himself yet. With practice the ability could be extended to involve shield projection and flight.
Critical Preexisting Relationships: A few.
Charlie and Samuel Mayfield: Milo's parents, both in their early forties. Charlie is a stay-at-home mother, and drives Milo to and from school in addition to doing all of the typical 'mom' stuff for him. She knows of his constant school tomfoolery, due to constant calls from the staff if nothing else, but loves Milo too much to openly tell him his behaviour is out of line. Samuel is an accountant, and his heavy work hours keep him unaware of the full gravity of Milo's school life. The two parents both do everything for their son, and he responds to them with moderate respect. Deep down, he loves them both and believes that he doesn't show them the admiration they deserve, but he wouldn't dare break his cocky persona to tell them that.
Deacon Thampi: One of Milo's best friends, and one that would follow him into trouble no matter the potential risk. The two of them read the same comic books, play the same sports (usually together, on the weekend), and both have no idea what they're going to do with their lives after high school. Milo's friend doesn't have the same natural charm that he does, and so they exist in different social circles, but Milo makes plenty of time for him nonetheless. Deacon often mocks Milo for his obsession with Roxanne Lyon, attempting to convince his pal that the quiet girl isn't as pretty as he thinks. Milo vehemently disagrees every time.
Riley Razier: Riley is one year older than Milo, and two times as strong. Ever since they met when Milo started primary school, they've been enemies. Riley is a football player and a social beast, not as charming as Milo but leagues more attractive, giving him easy access to the 'cool clique'. Riley is jealous of Milo because he has such a talent for making people like him with words. The two clashed a lot in middle school, and in Riley's final year the harassment started turning to straight-up bullying. On more than one occasion he injured the physically inferior Milo while nobody was around to protect him, and the prankster's constant war with the school staff made it very difficult for him to seek help from them. The two of them have hardly seen each other in a year since Riley moved to King City High, but now that Milo is in the same school as him as a freshman, they are destined to meet again.
Roxanne Lyon: Roxanne, usually called 'Roxy', is also a King City High freshman this year and has been Milo's crush since they were twelve years old. They've been in the same class for as long as he can remember, and for some unthinkable reason she has no appreciation for his jokes. The thing is, most of the girls who disapprove of his shenanigans are vocal about it; telling him to shut up or at least giving him a good eye roll. Roxy doesn't say anything, and in fact she seems completely indifferent to Milo's presence, which fascinates him even moreso. In truth, she's a very timid girl who lives mostly in disbelief that somebody could be as cocky as Mayfield is. She's too shy to approach him, and for some reason Milo can never bring himself to start a conversation with her, and so they rarely talk. The boy does talk about her to his friends a lot, however, and is often chastised for being so worried about one girl.
Snap: Snap is a mutt that Milo received for Christmas when he was twelve years old. Snap is destructive, loud, and constantly ignores commands from Milo's parents. Obviously, he and the boy get along like soul mates. Snap usually sleeps in Milo's room, sometimes in the bed with him if the month is particularly cold, and they play together every morning before school. Snap is too stupid to participate in most of Milo's schemes, though the boy is constantly trying to educate his friend about the intricacies of practical jokes.
Weaknesses: Milo is absolutely fearless when it comes to his words, and this usually ends up being a curse more than a blessing. If he comes up with something to say that he thinks is funny, it doesn't matter if he's talking to his best friend or his principal - he'll blurt it out. A lot of the time, he can ruin an easily-defused situation by saying something absolutely inane at the worst time. Furthermore, this behaviour has earned him a reputation among school staff as a troublemaker, and so they will often take measures to catch him in the act before he's even done anything.
Cause, Motives, or Mission Statement: Despite his prankster tendencies and careless attitude, Milo does have a strong moral centre. While he isn't beyond inflicting minor pain or misfortune to his victims, he considers actual serious injuries and attacks to be too far. Towards the end of middle school, he was offered on more than one occasion a large sum of money in return for stolen exam answers. He was excited by the challenge of stealing documents from the school, but he completely dismissed the idea of cheating on exams. His classmates didn't understand it, but he refused to do such a thing, considering it to be 'foul play'. As his power develops, will begin to investigate and help with issues outside of the school merely for his own entertainment, though his strange sense of honour will push him to go a step beyond and do the right thing when absolutely necessary.
